What punishment for the killers of Ilan Halimi?
By Ben-Meir Hayoun
The Jewish Community of France is on alert as we approach the trial of the killers of Ilan Halimi due to begin April 29. Captured
because Jew, Ilan was tortured, tortured for three weeks before succumbing. One can imagine the descent into hell, the endless suffering, the humiliation of our unfortunate brother Ilan for whom death was under such circumstances, release. This crime seems to come from another time, a reality that we thought was over and we both used to want to forget. A terrible case of recycling methods of torture by the Gestapo.
The emotion aroused by the assassination, probably the most atrocious of recent years in France, is increasing due to rising anti-Semitic acts of start of the 2009 and cries of "Death to Jews" by hundreds of Thousands of demonstrators across Europe. Moreover, the fear of the legal system to give way to complacency and cowardice conceal these aspects, does not mitigate the concerns Jews.
Before the determination and sadism unheard made by the killers, we can not be challenged by the call to murder, by the dehumanization of Jews in this first decade of the third millennium.
Nobody will dot the "i" on this matter if the Jews do not do it themselves. Precursors, the Jews of France were innovative and origin of many letters of nobility who honor of the French Republic, for example the abolition of slavery by Adolphe Cremieux
Today, it is in the same spirit of initiative and perseverance of the Jews France should demand the punishment that he must be torturers of Ilan Halimi. They must do so for Ilan and the image of God was in him, for themselves as Jews, and especially for the French company that starts to drift.
We are indebted to Robert Badinter, the Attorney General under President Francois Mitterrand, the abolition of the death penalty in France. Mr. Badinter, whose father was deported to Sobibor, had literally fought like a lion to abolish capital punishment and the guillotine relegated to oblivion. We remember his poignant argument in 1976 to save the death penalty for Patrick Henry the murderer of a child of seven years.
nature of the Nazi murder of Ilan Halimi, on behalf of the values that motivated the great men like Robert Badinter to abolish the death penalty, we are driven to restore it to an exceptional and temporary for killers of Ilan. It is with determination that the Jewish organizations in France, headed by Mr. Badinter, must mobilize to French and European legislators that the death penalty is applicable and claimed by the prosecution.
of Ilan's murderers will no longer do their infamous comedy and bluster in courses as was the case during sessions preliminary trial. This has constituted either a real stain on his memory, a real knife in the wound turned to the family of Ilan. Before the event to see their heads roll by head after being severed from their bodies by the blade of the guillotine, many of the murderers of Ilan may be better prepared to be confused with regret and pleading for leniency for court.
It is not thus give vent to a sense of unbridled vengeance. The concept of justice itself is not measured by the standard of punishment attached to a particular crime. There are crimes coming out of any standard. The punishment must be the expression of the exceptional seriousness as perceived by this heinous crime. Therefore, rehabilitating the death penalty out of mothballs and the guillotine is required for the killers of Ilan. This must be the watchword and rallying of the Jewish community of France, all controversy aside. This exemption is necessary if one just wants to maintain the abolition of capital punishment.
Not far from the phone shop where Ilan worked on Boulevard Voltaire, 22 April, young Jews displaying posters in his memory have been assaulted. In entire French society, the murder of Ilan Halimi is not perceived as a horrible crime. A society in which the murder of a Jew in Nazi terms of crime may be sentenced Admiration is a company forward and we can not predict the state of chaos far it could sink . Breaking heads Fofana and his acolytes is the expression of the burst required for the French company can recover.
Jewish Community should be at the forefront of this struggle. It must hold stakes in court, with giant demonstrations non-Jewish political sharing concerns. It should send delegations of its most eminent personalities from the National Assembly, Senate, ministries and the Elysee Palace to demand the restoration of capital punishment in exceptional and temporary. France's Jewish dignity, the dignity of the French Republic and its future depend on it.
In this field as in others, the Jews must be the precursors. They must be those who see long-term and contribute to the viability of their host country. They must do so with strength and intelligence, without fear of unpopularity or reprisals, as they have done to abolish the death penalty when the punishment was widespread and accepted.
In my case, I intend to manifest itself even before the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem to demand the death penalty for killers of Ilan and I will submit a letter to the Consul General to transmit to Elysium. Those who want to join are welcome.
Finally, in his death, the young Jew Ilan Halimi in radiant face, pointed the direction to his Jewish brothers and sisters in France. He was going to come live in Israel, the ultimate stage of the great journey of the Jews since the beginning of exile 2,000 years ago. Today, Ilan is the cemetery of Givat Shaul in Jerusalem. It justice and to live here is the minimum that must be accomplished.
